MAMA Honey: Sweetening Lives, One Hive at a Time

Beekeeping in East Pokot isn’t just a livelihood—it’s a lifeline. In a region facing poverty, drought, and limited economic opportunity, our MAMA Honey initiative empowers women and youth with income-generating skills that also support maternal health.

Through our community apiary in Orus, we are creating a sustainable local business that strengthens household resilience while contributing profits back to our maternity center.

What We’re Doing

Launched in 2023, the MAMA Honey project currently operates:

  • 11 active Langstroth hives at our Orus Center
  • Hands-on training for women and youth in hive management, honey harvesting, and safe handling
  • Emergency honey distributions during droughts
  • Local sale of raw honey to fund health services

We are working toward building an end-to-end honey value chain—from production to processing, packaging, and sales.

Impact So Far

  • ✓ 11 hives active and producing
  • ✓ 20+ community members trained (including women and youth)
